Antrum (2018) Movie Review

For starters, this film was made back in the 70’s, but was recently released as it was deemed to be “safe enough to watch”, I suppose. Or for thrill seekers who want to see a horror movie with real, extra horror added to it.

Some background, Antrum is a cult horror movie that was said to be cursed, and would kill those who watch it. To give you an idea on it’s notoriety, it was literally labeled the “Deadliest Film Ever Made”. In the 80’s, a theater in Budapest that was showing the movie burned down, and killed 56 people. Not to mention a few deaths following the release, due to people dying in odd or unexplainable ways after viewing the movie.

So what at your own risk. There was a small documentary and warning at the beginning to explain how ‘cursed’ the film truly is.

For starters, the film is actually very pretty. The shots they have are very aesthetic, but everything about the film is eerie. Is it the thought that it’s cursed and I’m nervous? Maybe, but there is certainly a harsh tension to it. Pretty skies and forests, and there’s a very soft look to the movie due to its age. But the age doesn’t show, it seems so modern and carries itself very seriously. It’s also voiced over, as it is a foreign (Russian?) film.

Throughout the film, there is very unnerving imagery that gets to you. It gets under your skin and it brings you back to a time when you were a kid scared of the dark. Irrational fear that you just can’t explain.

All you need to know about the movie’s plot is that a brother and sister dig a hole to hell. But as simple as it is, it really make this film all the more unsettling. But it’s certainly not scary. No jumpscares (if you’re not a fan of them, I understand), but the tone is just stressful.

So, I haven’t died yet, so I’ll keep you all updated if this movie actually kills me or not. Looking at the other reviews on this movie, I’d say it doesn’t kill everyone. If I miraculously die in the next few days, then deuces!
